I figure God knew one of the best ways for me to naturally learn to be a servant was through my career in the medical field. I have been a Nurse Practitioner for two in a half years. Prior to going back to school, I worked as a full time Emergency Medicine nurse for six years. I have also worked in the ICU, Med Surg, & Cardiac Unit. The one thing all these departments have in common is that you must always have a heart to serve people/patients. Is it financially rewarding? Yes. Are there many options of where you can work? Yes. Are there amazing additional benefits? Well yes, but if being an aid to people isn’t high on your priority list I encourage you to look for another career.
I returned to graduate school because I wanted to further my education naturally. I learned so much in my six years that I realized I was only short changing myself if I didn’t strive for greater. Spiritually however, I wanted to widen the opportunity to witness to MDs, fellow NPs, and Pa’s. When I spoke about God, I wanted them to take me seriously. Sounds dramatic? I know it does! The reality, however, is some do not listen or consider what you have to say if they feel superior to you. I’ve encountered this numerous times.
Let’s equal the playing field
I’ve had it all: money, success, traveling around the world, but I lacked a life changing relationship with God. Did I pray? Yes. Did I say I was a Christian? Yes. Yet the thirty second prayer I prayed at night, before bed, and over supper wasn’t enough to change me. I had everything the world said I needed, yet I fell into depression, anxiety, discouragement, and hopelessness that led me spiraling down a path I never thought I’d have to walk. I’ve seen people in the medical field give their all to take care of patients but neglect what they need mentally and spiritually: a relationship with God that changes them forever.
Naturally I am a NP, but my intent each day is to challenge those around me to dig deeper, put more effort into giving God more of your time, and apply his word one day at a time! His word promises that if we draw nigh to him, he will draw nigh to us. I’ve learned, no career, amount of money, or any physical attainment can truly fill the void God puts inside us. Only he can do that!
Ask yourself: Do you exemplify God in your behavior on your job? In your school? Is God shown in your church or are you just comfortable there? Has the word of God guided the daily decisions that you make? Luke 6:46 says “And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say”?
People grow suicidal because of hopelessness. Others turn to drugs, alcohol, promiscuity or self- inflicting abuse. I’m here as a witness that God can restore your hope and give you a purpose. Self value and contentment only comes through God. Don’t believe me? Pray! Try him for yourself. Wherever you are in your walk, whatever condition you find yourself, God has the remedy!
